Disclaimer: I'm not even a quarter as good with Terragen as a lot of people are. But, I really wanted to do this kind of wallpaper, so I basically did all my work through guesswork. It didn't come out as good as I would have liked, but untill Terragen can do those "advanced distributions", I have to use trial and error for everything.

Anyways, this wallpaper is based off a theme in the newest Magic: The Gathering set, called Time Spiral. See, the plot of the set is that time itself is going haywire. Occasionally, things from the past will be brought back to the present. You'll be walking somewhere, and meet up with your great grandfather. Or you'll be relaxing at the park, and you're disturbed by the sound of a WW1-era house suddenly 2 feet from you.

On the cards themselves, the art tends to follow a theme: in the background, you can see a worn-down, modern {thing}, and a magical effect that brings an ancient, well-working part of that {thing} back. This can be seen fairly easilly on Curse of the Cabal ([link]) or Search For Tomorrow ([link]).

So, I decided to use Terragen to make a wallpaper, with this kind of effect. I designed a landscape with blue skies, grass, and water. Then I redid it with rocky, dried-out wastes. Then, I used my limited photoshop Magic to make a "the ideal past returning from the rubble of the present".

Was it as good as I would have liked? God no. I barely understand Terragen. I barely understand Photoshop. But hey, I ain't done anything in a while, so whatever.

I'm putting 'Advanced Critique Encouraged" simply because I'd like some hints and pointers.
